[Atrilli Discussion] Is T.I. Still The King Of The South?

TI-Crown

Time for another Atrilli Discussion. Over the years, Ti has made a name for himself with constant #1 albums, singles and grammys for work he has put in. #1 albums include King, T.I. vs T.I.P., and Paper Trail. He also won “Best Rap Solo Performance” for What You Know, Best Rap Sung Collaboration for My Love, and Best Rap Performance by a Duo Or a Group for Swagga Like Us. Since Paper Trail, Tip has run into many legal issues which also seemed to effect his career. When No Mercy that dropped in 2010 with lukewarm reviews, many T.I. fans lost faith in the ATL rapper. The real question is… Is T.I. still the King Of the South like he proclaimed himself years ago? Will his upcoming album Trouble Man live up to his previous work? If you DO NOT believe T.I. is the king of the south, than tell me.. Who is? Leave your response in the comment section below. And look for Trouble Man on December 18th.

Future has the potential to be the future (no pun) of the South.

Rick Ross and Lil’ Wayne have the popularity to rival T.I. as king of the south.
Gucci Mane and 2 Chainz took his trap style to another level, albeit a more “dumbed down” version. Gucci’s popularity has been on the decline, while 2 Chainz has been the other way around. BOATS was worth the download but nothing earth-shattering.
Young Jeezy, a personal favorite, seems to have fallen off in terms of popularity but is still churning out guest verses, Real is Back series of mixtapes, and TM103 most recently.

Although Lil’ wayne doesn’t put out solely “southern rap” as he did in the days leading up to C2 but I’d still call him the king of the south. He has the awards, the crew YMCMB (nicki, drake, and tyga are all super popular) and more music than any other rapper I’ve heard. He’s had more longevity than any of the aforementioned and he just turned 30. D4 proved Weezy’s still got it. Now he’s more into skating but that doesn’t change the fact of his popularity -if anything it expands it. He’s the most diverse artist with albums like Rebirth being rock, WE Are YM being pop rap, and other projects touching on R&B, soul, rap, hip hop, etc. influenced by several different regions. He’s well respected by his peers and highly regarded by a strong fan base. He represents his hometown of New Orleans and still remains close to the South in that sense, musically and personally.

Tough call but for me Wayne took the title from T.I. around 2007-08 and has had it ever since. Rick Ross is an honorable mention but the fact that his persona is based on another person hurts his case.

Lil’ Wayne has made some questionable moves recently but that doesn’t change the facts: he’s made southern-style rap and rap in general more popular than ever and has collaborated with pretty much every type/genre of artist. He’s been on so many tours, rapped so many guest verses, so many mixtapes and albums. He still is music.

Future has no potential of being anything to real music listeners. His music is horrible. If you can give me a song and its artistic content and/or note his lyrical ability i would be glad to listen to it. Gucci Mane and 2Chainz are horrible. Gucci Mane it in the same boat as Future. 2Chainz may have lyrical ability , artistic quality or originality but has a few songs i enjoy. The best song i heard from him is Birthday Cake. He cannot make a good song about anything else but big booty hoes??? Rick Ross is from so i dont even know why his name is in your comment. Lil Wayne is the most consistent rapper out , and i can say that with no doubt but Lil Wayne is from new orleans and he reps new orleans. NOT THE SOUTH. Yes new orleans is in the south and Lil wayne would definitely be debate worthy for king of the south but he only cares for new orleans , not the south as a whole. Young Jeezy is definitely a south rapper. He slipped my mind. Young Jeezy being the new king of the south is debate worthy. It doesnt seem much lik hes losing popularity to me. Maybe Jeezy can be crowned the new king…. maybe

I would like to correct myself .. i meant 2Chainz may NOT have lyrical ability , artistic quality or originality but has a few songs i enjoy… sorry for my mistake.. people reading my comment probably had a heart attack reading that particular sentence

        • swag says:

Ross is from Carol City…the South. New Orleans is the south. Check a US map

          • guest says:

Ok you obviously cannot read. i said Rick Ross is from miami but i was wrong and hes from carol city. Thats still florida and florida is physically the south part of the us but not the same south that ti is proclaimed king of. And i said CLEARLY that new orleans is the south. Read my comment over if you dont believe

          • swag says:

the is the king of the south discussion not the king of the part of the south t.i. is from…anyways that would be atlanta which i realize is diff from the miami bass genre…still southern rap though. I saw CLEARLY that you CLEARLY said that CLEARLY lil wayne was CLEARLY from the south. but not the same part T.I. is from. SMH

          • guest says:

You CLEARLY cannot read because i said Lil Wayne ONLY reps new orleans .. Not the south , and thats why i said he cant be king of the south .. T.I. doesnt only rep atlanta he reps the south as a whole .. I never said anything about him being the king of only where hes from .. Rick Ross should be no where near this discussion cause he doesnt even consider himself a southern rapper .. Theres not one song where Ross reps the south ..

T.I. is still king of the south .. who from the south came out with better lyricism than him ,, Future ?! Waka ?! Keef Chief ?! ,, the list of horrible south rappers ,, or as they call themselves “Trap Stars” ,, goes on .. Trap music is horrible in my opinion and T.I. , B.o.B , Cyhi and maybe a few more south repping rappers ,, that i cant think of ,, are worthy enough to get on my ipod. Past accomplishments aside T.I. is currently the ONLY respected south rapper i like. Andre 3000 is washing his hands in the light by doing features but until he decides to fully illuminate there wont be any valid debate in this Atrilli Discussion.

  3. jay haze says:

BRUH CHEIF KEEF FROM CHI HE NOT EVEN SOUTHERN FOR 1 AND FOR 2 BUN B IS DA KING OF DA SOUTH.

    • guest says:

you actually right .. chief keef just sounded like he was from the south to me .. But when was Bun B’s last record ? .. how can he be king if hes not consistent .. T.I. went to jail and still had records coming out and made albums immediately after release.

  4. shlungus says:

i mean if you’re talkin straight record sales and hits wayne’s had that title and still does. if you ask me though, Big Boi the king of the fuckin south. If his new album is as good as chico dusty im gonna cream

    • Zac says:

So your saying Big Boi over Andre? Andre 3000 is by far one of the best lyricists to ever spit a bar. Easily a better rapper than any of the rapers listed above.

      • shlungus says:

yeah but hes not really kingly hes like the wizard that runs shit from behind the scenes

      • guest says:

Your right about Andre 3000 being the most lyrical but like i said above .. hes only doing features right now .. He cant take the throne unless he gives reason for us to crown him .. T.I. is by far the king of the south

  5. Terry says:

Rick Ross is the boss and has taken the thrown from T.I. he has been so consistent the last 3 years from Teflon Don, Ashes To Ashes & Rich Forever mixtape, and just recently God Forgives I don’t. He also handling his business in the corporate scene as well with MMG.

  6. West says:

    What about Ludacris?
His lyrical ability and flow is always mad and on point. I think recently he is losing popularity but i think he is more consecutive and a stronger artist than T.I

  7. K.J. Hicks says:

Rick Ross hasnt taken the throne from NOBODY. He is the fakest out there and his music is good and he is a good actor, but as far as being in tha trap and sellin weight and witnessing murder and all that shit, TI is 110% REAL and rick ross is just a big fat ass who makes up a life he never had in his lyrics in an attempt to gain respect….. You aint got respect you fake fat fuck

  8. KILA says:

In my opinion the term K.O.T.S. goes beyond music & regional popularity it also ties into respect in other areas plus what u do for your kommunity. My arguement is that T.I. is Still the K.O.T.S. no other rapper from the South has his own TV show, still making records, helps his kommunity, n has respect from other areas. The part a lot of ppl r missing is the Respect. Rick Ross doesn’t get any respect in the streets (trap, hood, etc.) he is living a LIE n stole an O.G.’s name. The real Freeway Ricky Ross doesn’t support that fat ass dude. His krew is made up of niggas from Philly Kleveland & Baltimore! Only Southern rapper on his label is GunPlay so sorry Ross u lose. The only valid kompetitors In My Opinion would be Young Buck & Yo Gotti but they r both still relatively Underground BUT they do have all the komponents I listed above just not on a National Level. Also Big K.R.I.T. who is Lyrical, Produces his own material, n has Major Label just not as Known. So other than that u just gotta pay homage to Legends 8Ball Bun B & 36 but the Krown remains with The King. >T.I.

  9. blazethaking_ says:

how quickly people forget. the only oppsing person for the the title KOTS would jeezy. but even jeezy or anybody has referred to being the king of the south, because it is already t.i.’s title. Ludacris barely even fucks with music. Trouble Man Wont Do Numbers How His Previous work because has lost followers but i know he still got it. dont bring up these rookie niggaz vs a vet

  10. 215aphilliate says:

Lil Wayne is clearly the best rapper in the South based on sales, popularity, & talent.
Jeezy & Ross are far behind Wayne but tied for 2nd.
2 Chainz gets the nod after them because of his growing popularity and #1 album
    T.I. falls in here.

  11. Paul Evans says:

No matter how much commercial success or how many dollars he makes Bun B the Trill OG of the the south is king and second to him another southern rapper true to himself speaking real truth is my man Big K.R.I.T
