Atrilli Discussion: Is There A Future For Odd Future?

odd future

Tyler, The Creator was arguably the hottest new artist of 2011. With Yonkers, and winning best new artist at the MTV VMA’s. He also dropped his Debut album Goblin. Other Odd Future Members Frank Ocean, Hodgy Beats, and Earl Sweatshirt have also been making a lot of noise. But, is this all a “gimmick”? Is this getting old? Will people care about OF down the road? How far do you see Odd Future going before people decide not to care? Will they have to change their style? Leave your opinion in the comment section Below

    They’re just getting started..

  2. Cass says:

Yes they are a gimmick but I guess they had to be to seperate themselves enough to be noticed in the first place. Using Wu-Tang as a comparison – if they can do the same and manage to continue to release both strong collective and solo efforts they’ll stay interesting. Tyler’s got that production aspect down like RZA so he can keep things fresh behind the scenes. One bonus of being such a large group is that each member can branch into different areas to generate interest for the group as a whole – i.e. acting/clothing label etc. While they’re young their attitude and image are getting them a lot of attention as they and their careers grow they’ll have to progress and mature both themselves and their sound to ensure they keep their integrity and longevity. It could go either way…

  3. Tizzy says:

Ye they’re a gimmick..^ he said it very well. I used to think they was dope but tbh they gettin old fast now..really annoying any more and I feel like there isn’t a good message to their music like, say, Nas puts into it.

  4. Ty says:

I think that Tyler is a dope mc that cd they just dropped was hot the rest I don’t know about I think they still got a chance to make great music I think something is about to pop real fast with them

  5. conor says:

I don’t think that odd future is a gimmick per say. they are just young kids making music that they want to. However their music is getting old fast. At first it was abrasive and new (to mainstream hip hop not underground). I think that Tyler, Earl, and Hodgy have the skills to keep making music people want to hear, but they need to loose the odd future clan because the group as a whole is getting old.

  6. Qadeem says:

Earl hasn’t even put an album out yet, Frank Ocean and Tyler more than likely have their albums dropping this year as well.

  7. tuccc says:

They have all something to offer. They hit the rap scene with tyler, hodgy, and earl. Then they have R&B scene with frank ocean. Also, they hit a whole different group of people with there music i feel. The way they will last though is if they play it smart and start to give a shit more because tyler makes it seem like he doesn’t care about the industry. If he keeps doing that i feel like the industry will just let him go and not care about him and that will be the end of OF.

  8. Marcus says:

I honestly I feel like that they will make it very far. They are rappers just like any other rapper. Some of them are better than more known rappers and I personally feel like they have a unique rhyme scheme and technique and that will take them far in the long run.

  9. JayDre says:

Lets just say Casey Veggies made a smart decision to do his own thing and leave OF behind…

  10. namerobbedbyalame says:

Frank Ocean and Tyler are the only ones that will last.

  11. JustAFanOfMusic says:

Nah, I think they can last… they’ve actually been progressing before our very eyes.

Remember the days when you wouldn’t give Domo Genesis a spin? Now the times have changed and you’re clamoring for more of him even though you weren’t a fan of his? You keep rewinding & fast-fowarding ‘Oldie’ until hear: “It’s still Mr. Smoke-A-Lot-Of-Pot…”?!

Yeah… each member is stepping up. MellowHigh will be the duo to watch out for… I think Earl and Tyler will mostly be focusing on their solo efforts than their EarlWolf shit.

Earl will really be the one to watch for on the solo scene… he already had a cult following, now that he’s back in the lab and we witness what greaterness he can create with Chuck Inglish… shit will be CRITICAL!

Side Note: Every one knows Frank is gonna eat up the R&B scene. That shit’s a given.

  12. Cole says:

I think that as a group Odd Future will not sustain the hype they have gained. The whole “Wolf Gang” thing will start to get old. However, I think that there are individuals that have a very bring future. Tyler is an incredible producer, and he will continue to succeed as long as he starts to shift his focus from the violent, joking style of music to a more serious, musical style. Earl will continue to amaze the world. Frank will succeed greatly, but he will probably start to break off from OF, even though he is already more independent than the others. I think the others will continue to feature on songs and put out quality music, but will not be as successful as Tyler, Earl, and Frank.

  13. GDollazzz says:

I’m a big fan of Odd Future, and I don’t think they’re a gimmick. They’re ignorant just cause that’s the way they are. I think that their fan base is really young right now so maybe in a few years most of their fans will grow up and not care about them. But I see some rappers in OF already maturing, like Hodgy and some other members. Also, they have stopped rapping about raping, killing, and things that are categorized as “horrorcore”. They might be like Eminem; remember when he was really ignorant and crazy? Now he’s a mature person and raps about more serious topics. But even if you don’t like their music you have to admit they are funny as fuck and that is a big reason they are so popular.

  14. l3lackstar says:

Whoever mentioned Casey Veggies up there – no. He was never with OF, just affiliated. Same with that Vince Staples dude.

To be honest it’s the classic case of “now that everybody wants to fuck with OF it’s not cool any more.” There’s still talent, Domo and Hodgy have consistently gotten better at rapping since inception and Earl can still spit. Left Brain has always been a dope producer so I can see him branching out including the other three aforementioned. Frank can do his own ting too as we’ve already seen.

As for Tyler, his antics are just getting stale. I can see him becoming a better overall producer as he’s shown talent in that area but unless something bad is happening to Tyler emotionally his rhymes suffer because that’s what gave him the lyrical creativity. Without that muse he falters rapping wise, maybe he should stick to just producing and the odd guest verse. Mike G had an interesting debut but he hasn’t done anything good since; “The Internet” is fucking annoying and I don’t even think the Super 3 exist as part of OF. Must be some running gag with the group or some shit.

  15. JustAFanOfMusic says:

Casey Veggies was in OFWGKTA, idiot. OF use to be just Tyler, Casey, and MellowHype.

  16. koustourika says:

Yeap Casey Veggies was a OF: http://www.hiphopdx.com/index/news/id.16144/title.casey-veggies-talks-leaving-odd-future-meeting-jay-z

And i found it much better righ now! Sleeping in Class is doppest thant actual OF sound

  17. RaShawn says:

Odd Future isnt a gimmick they are jus.blowing up. instead of rapping about money.cars and clothes they rap about different topics. They will be around for a long time
